A Glimpse Into My Fascination with Model Building

I come from a family of artistic people. My grandfather was musically gifted and worked as an upholsterer for the Rock Island Railroad. I still have one of his handmade sofas. My father was an advertising artist back in the days before computers, CGI and artificial intelligence. I still have his color wheel and drafting tools. While I didn't inherit my father's skill to draw and sketch, I did inherit his curiosity and fascination for working with my hands.

Those inherent traits found their way into my young imagination and into the world of scale models. Long afternoons of building with my friend Scott, every detail reproduced to the best of our abilities. Of course many of my creations found their way into the backyard where they were blown up or set ablaze, no doubt recreating some spectacular car crash or battle.

Despite how my builds of the past met their early demise, the scale modeling seed was planted and a lifelong passion was born.

Unveiling the Craftsmanship: Precision at Its Finest

My studio is my sanctuary, where every miniature is a masterpiece in the making. And while I consider myself a novice at best, and though I struggle to find a steady hand, the attention to detail is sublime, with each part designed and assembled with the utmost care. From the sleek curves of a starship to the recreation of a diorama that depicts a scene in a movie, every creation exudes a sense of pride in accomplishment.

Behind the Scenes: A Glimpse into the Creative Process

From the initial rough sketches on paper to the final touches that bring a model to life, for me, can be a long road. My tremors often interrupt my workflow or keep me from the bench all together. Let's face it, scale modeling requires a steady hand. From applying a decal or hand painting a fine detail, precision is key. I've had to rediscover ways to accomplish such detailed work and it's not always a success, and it's usually laced with, shall I say, "colorful metaphors." It's at that time where I'll be forced to take a break ... and have a drink. Fortunately, I have no interest in being a surgeon.

Embracing Disabilities: Pushing the Boundaries of Possibility

My professional occupation puts me in touch with many people living with a disability. In fact, my childhood friend, Charles, was a paraplegic, so I've seen first-hand how people can overcome their disabilities and I never saw him as "disabled" but simply as my friend. We bantered with the best of them, he earned a IT degree, drove some of the coolest cars. Perhaps it was those early life lessons and my professional experiences that helped prepare me to adapt my disability into my life.

Sharing what's possible is what lead to the foundation of Tremor Studios. Innovation is at the heart of everything I put on the bench, I constantly push the boundaries of what is possible, and hope to encourage other artists and builders to do the same.
